…Because face it, it is the best idol unit ever…
1- Great Songs
First and foremost, the songs. Because an idol unit is mainly supposed to sing songs (even if super groups like AKB48 spending more time on television and in commercials than on stage make us forget that) so it doesn’t hurt when the songs are actually good.
Momoiro Clover Z have a bunch of great exciting songs. Even if the sound mix make the girls’ voices way louder than anything else, you will immediately understand you’re not listening to some generic idol music. Especially the singles, which are often long with a lot of bridges and changes of pace, are impressive in the way they challenge the pop song format to bring something new and unexpected to the mix.
90’s parapara rubbing shoulder with some beautiful strings and horns section IN THE VERY SAME SONG is something quite usual in Momoiro Clover Z universe.
Listen Otome Senso, Rodosha, Lost Child or Mouretsu Pirates and you’ll understand what I mean.
This point is clearly intricated with the one above. Since the start, Momoiro Clover Z quickly gained fans into the music community. And when you end up having Etsuko Yakushimaru (Soutaiseiriron) or Hotei Tomoyasu writing songs for you, you can be pretty sure your next hit will not sound like the next AKB48 sub-sub-sub-unit.

Yoshida Brothers, The Wild Ones, Marty Friedman (amongst others) also collaborated at one point or another with MomoClo.
3- Whacky Costumes
If we love japanese idol music, it’s partly because of its whackiness, right? We are expecting silly and cheerful. Cute teenage girls singing about coconuts flavored marshmallows in colorful and crazy costumes and stuff like that.
Momoiro Clover Z has a huge collection of those (colorful and crazy costumes not songs about marshmallows). Ninjas, space warriors, christmas, weird swimsuits… Almost each of their hit-songs come with a bizarre concept and the appropriate costume. The good point is that they’re not looking cheap.
And it’s refreshing compared to the old ‘high school uniform’ thing.
4- Epic Live Shows
This might as well been the first point of my argumentation : Momoiro Clover Z live performances are just incredible! They usually sing close to thirty songs with full power, the only few slow songs of their songbook hardly allow them to catch their breath during their 3 hours performance.
Big stages with giant screens, water jets, smoke cannons, frenzied choreography (no, really just watch) and last but not least an unbelievable amount of energy spent by the 5 girls.
So yeah, Kanako, Ayaka, Momoka, Shiori and Reni may not be the cutest girls in the idol industry but they are certainly the ones who sweat the most just to bring a smile to your face.
And that deserves respect.
